Book One in the Edgars Family Romantic Suspense Novels

A Man in Desperate Need

FBI Agent Jake Carlisle is in deep trouble. While undercover he's been shot, but he's not sure if it's the crooks or local cops behind it. Worse, if he can't get help fast, two lives will be lost - his and that of the young witness, a boy whom he's sworn to protect. On the run from both the police and the Russian Mafia, Jake will do anything to save the child at his side, even something illegal. In desperation he kidnaps a nurse from a hospital parking lot.

A Woman at the Edge of Despair

ER nurse Samantha Edgars has been living in an emotional vacuum since the death of her daughter. Abandoned by her husband not long afterward, she struggles just to get through each day, but now all she wants is for the pain to stop and to finally be at peace with her child. Mentally and physically exhausted following a difficult shift, she walks through the hospital's dark parking lot lost in her own thoughts. Suddenly she's jolted from her stupor when she's bound, gagged, and tossed into the back of her car.

Danger on Their Heels

When they arrive at her home, she's terrified and forced to tend to a bleeding FBI agent and his injured witness. But Samantha quickly learns the rogue agent and orphaned boy need more than just her professional skills. With a menace bearing down on them, she must learn to trust Jake - and her heart - if they're all going to survive.

Kidnapped An Edgars Family Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Suzanne Ferrell Paul Boehmer Audible Studios Books

Sam (Samantha) is a nurse who is "kidnapped." She is on the lam with Jake, an undercover FBI agent who is protecting a young Russian boy who witnessed a high-level murder committed by the Russian mob. This is a wonderful plot for a book, I'll admit that. If the author had taken the time to research famous persons who had been kidnapped (Patty Hurst, Manson Family, etc.) she might have written a wonderful story about the complexities of Stockholm Syndrome (where the kidnapped fall in love with the kidnapper) and woven a taught, psychological thriller. Instead, she goes for the lowest common denominator and has Sam noticing what a "nice ass" the kidnapper has, long before she even knows that he's an FBI agent and not a bad guy. Even this would be OK if she had been painted as someone who had become bored with life and was an inherent thrill seeker, but she's neither. She's a staid nurse who's had some of her own issues and is starved for attention and understanding. Yawn. This book is bad Nicholas Sparks meet bad James Bond.
.
Before you flame me as an unhelpful review, just read this "chic lit" dialogue: "She slowly stretched the latex condom on him. Where he had gotten it from (ungrammatical), she didn't want to ask. The fact he thought to protect her fed her desire for him." (This is pretty cheesy, but it gets worse). "Her body flushed with anticipation. Heat surged through her breasts, both nipples drawing taut in response to the primal need of a woman for her man. Liquid fire settled in the juncture of her thighs."
.
If you like one-dimensional characters and tawdry, obtuse sex scenes, then this book is for you. Else, steer clear of this twaddle. It in NO WAY lives up to its potential. I couldn't even finish it.

Kidnapped An Edgars Family Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Suzanne Ferrell Paul Boehmer Audible Studios Books Reviews

This is pretty much what I've come to expect from modern romantic suspense. Lots of racing around hiding from killers, and a couple who just met having wild sex in their down moments. A few things made me roll my eyes hard, such as the FBI agent who can't simply tell the nurse he kidnaps that he's an FBI agent and needs help. No, he must bully and threaten her, and let her believe he might rape and kill her. There is no reason for that except the author's desire to keep more tension in the story. I wound up skimming a lot because so much seemed predictable, and I got tired of their wild lust when they'd just met and didn't even know the truth about each other. That said, it's pretty well-written and if readers enjoy this kind of story, they should enjoy this one.
Jake Carlisle has been working for the last few years deep undercover in order to infiltrate a Russian mob organization. During this activity he tried to save a young Russian boy who witnessed a murder and has other important information that could lead to the imprisonment of the criminals. However, something goes wrong during the FBI operation to extract the young boy and Jake is shot. Needing medical care for himself and Nicholai but on the run from all the law enforcement agencies because he thinks that somebody has misinformed and misled them, Jake can't turn to any hospital or medical facility. The only solution is to kidnap somebody who has medical knowledge. The victim is Samantha Edgars, who is an ER nurse and on her way home. After her initial shock Samantha realizes that her kidnapper isn't a usual criminal and since she has already lost anything that is important in her life, she decides to help Jake.

Jake is an absolutely great male main character who has very pronounced protective feelings towards the weaker ones. Having experienced as a young boy what price his family had to pay for his father's undercover police work, he has decided that he has to stay a loner for the rest of his life. Well, when he decided that he didn't yet know Samantha and the feelings she would wake up in him.

Samantha on the other hand came with a lot of baggage. She lost everything that was dear to her and had actually taken a serious decision concerning her life at the day of her abduction. Her reactions during the kidnapping were very real and I could nearly relate to all of them. OK, there were some moments when I thought that some actions were beyond me but who knows how a person functions who made Samantha's experience in life and has taken the decision she took (sorry, can't really tell you more about this without spoiling!).

The story line was straight forward, without any twist and turns. However, the book was very entertaining and well written. Jake, Sami and Nicky were great main characters who supported the plot very well.

If you're looking for a nice and relaxed read I can but recommend this one to you.
